August 16, 2017 / no comments, on Garbage Disposal Buying Guide

Garbage Disposal Power

There’s nothing like the convenience of having a garbage disposal in your kitchen. Not too many years ago having a garbage disposal was considered a luxury. These days, though, having one is absolutely essential. With the sheer volume of food waste that is produced in most homes, it is simply much easier to get rid of most of it via a garbage disposal, instead of filling up the trash bin. For many people, though, choosing a new garbage disposal can be a bit challenging.

When the time comes to choose a new garbage disposal for your home you’ll have a few major features that you want to be on the lookout for. One of the most important features is power. Without adequate power, you may find that you end up with a garbage disposal that is too wimpy for your kitchen needs.

That’s why the first feature that should be on your list is horsepower. It’s crucial to get a disposer that is powerful enough to meet your needs, but not so powerful that you end up paying for a more expensive model than you really need.

Let’s take a look at some important information about choosing the correct horsepower motor when shopping for a new garbage disposal…

Disposal Motor

Garbage Disposal Horsepower Basics

As you’re checking out today’s best garbage disposals you’ll notice that they vary in horsepower. The least powerful models feature 1/4 horsepower motors.

Then you’ll see a gradual incline in power – starting at 1/2 horsepower motors and all the way up to 1 horsepower motors and beyond. For residential use, though, you’ll rarely see a disposal that offers more than 1 horsepower. The seriously juiced up motors are usually for commercial kitchen use.

1/4 Horsepower Motors – Smallest

Some people notice that the 1/4 horsepower disposals are the least powerful and immediately assume that these disposers are not the right ones for their kitchen. However, there are other things that you need to consider. If you are single or there are only two or three people in the family, one of these lower powered garbage disposals may be fine. It’s really a matter of how much tough kitchen food waste you produce.

For example, if you’re single and eat out most of the time, you can probably get by with a 1/4 horsepower motor garbage disposal with no issues. There are plenty of households that really don’t produce a lot of kitchen waste, and for those folks the lower powered models are more than sufficient.

1/2 & 3/4 Horsepower Motors – Middle of The Road

The majority of garbage disposals on the market today feature either 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower motors. For households that have 4 or more people, and where lots of meals are prepared and cooked at home, these are the disposals to choose.
If you cook several meals a day, and notice that you end up tossing out a lot of food peelings, then you’ll want to get a model that has the power you need to easily take care of food waste, while preventing kitchen sink clogs. With all other features being equal, we recommend spending the few extra bucks and getting more power with a 3/4 horsepower model.

1 Horsepower Motors – A Lot of Power

The most powerful residential garbage disposals feature 1 horsepower motors. We usually recommend these powerful appliances to homes where lots of fresh foods are prepared on a regular basis.

If you cook a lot of meals that include freshly peeled vegetables, fruits or perhaps chicken bones and fat trimmings, then you may want to pick up one of these super-charged models.

The 1+ horsepower motors are also a good choice for small restaurant kitchens.

Bottom line is if you have a lot of mouths to feed, and prepare lots of fresh foods that leave behind a fair amount of food waste – peels, seeds, bones, etc… – then you’ll want the most powerful kitchen waste disposer that you can get.

Keep these general guidelines in mind as you choose your next garbage disposal. And keep the other key features of a good disposal unit in mind too.

When you find the garbage disposal that has the perfect balance of features, power and a price that’s withing your budget, you will have found the ideal garbage disposal for your kitchen.
